The Silk Road is the popular name for a system of caravan trade routes that dates back more than 2,000 years, an important economic artery that stretched roughly 7,000 miles, from the Mediterranean to China’s Yellow River Valley. Earlier this year, the photographer Jehad Nga, on assignment for the Travel section, spent three weeks retracing part of the historic route in central Asia, driving from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Sydney to London and back. Nick, Kerry and Jez’s overland journey home via Australia, China, Tibet and Central Asia.

3 years ago I moved from sunny England to the more temperate shores of Australia and have lived in Sydney since. I haven’t really seen much of Aus whilst I’ve been here, my excuse is I’ve been working hard and going to uni. But now that I’ve handed in my final essay it’s only fitting that I also hand in my resignation and buy a campervan. There’s logic there somewhere. So I’ve decided to see this huge fly-ridden island that I guess I’ve adopted as my home. This will be with the company of Kerry and Jez, who are a couple of my good mates out here from England. My Australian friends all passed at the opportunity to drive 15,000kms in the middle of summer using a 24 year-old campervan. Then in April we fly to Beijing for the long journey home.
