Kiev to Kuala Lumpur 2010

Kiev to Kuala Lumpur 2010

I am now halfway on my trip from Kiev to Kuala Lumpur. The first part of my journey followed the route of Marco Polo, overland from Istanbul to Kashgar. Then I left the Marco Polo trail to visit the upper part of the Silk Road in Kazakhstan. From there I flew to India for the second part of my journey. I will head north through Nepal and rejoin the Silk Road in China. If all goes well I will end up in Malaysia by the end of the year.

Overnight stop in Urumqi on the way to Bishkek, arriving in Urumqi airport from Beijing we were hoping to just find the right terminal and chill for couple of hours, but when we checked at the Southern China Air we were given vouchers for a hotel! We told them we would be happy to stick around, but no! they insist we go in the hotel, we don’t see and passengers loitering and we took it that it is not allowed. The shuttle bus took ages and when we finally got to the hotel it was 3am, we had nice cup of jasmine tea we bought from the crazy Silk market in Beijing and went to sleep for couple hours.

And the Kyrgyz are one of those people. They really love their horses and a lot of their lives revolve around them. So I decided to find out what all the fuss was about, and in order to do so left with Ricky and Danielle for Kochkor from where we were going to book a horse trek to lake Song Kol.

All calm in Kyrgyzstan

All calm in Kyrgyzstan

In the mountains of Kyrgyzstan the snows have briefly retreated and nomad families are driving their flocks of sheep and yaks up the age-old route to the sweet alpine meadows
