Letter from Kyrgyzstan- -Dancing in Kyrgyzstan- by Robert Rosenberg *

From downstairs, the inevitable knocking on my door. 9:00 pm on a school night. What are the possibilities? Anarbek, manager of the milkless milk factory, inviting me to watch porn movies at his house? (“I have 150 of them.”) Some drunk stumbling through the snow across Karl Marx Street , who has taken it upon himself to learn English – tonight, in one sitting, no effort involved? Nurgazi, my undernourished twelve year-old neighbor, come to crouch in my house and watch the American grade papers for three hours?

Something a little bit different – four friends experience a spectacular riding/sightseeing holiday

Kyrgyzstan is a small mountainous country bordering China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Small Scale Farming is the main occupation of its five million inhabitants although many work abroad in order to survive. The whole country is covered in snow for a large part of the year and it is only from May to mid-September that it is possible for the shepherds to graze the mountains and for tourists to get around.

Desolation travel- Balykchy (KG) – A Town On The Edge – Кыргыз Ордо

Desolation travel- Balykchy (KG) – A Town On The Edge – Кыргыз Ордо

I’d heard a lot about Balykchy whilst living in Bishkek (the capital of Kyrgyzstan), and without exception nobody had a good word to say about the place. When I quizzed people as to what the town was like, I usually received a grimace as though someone had just let off a bad smell in the room merely by mentioning its name.

Fermented Milk by Renee Giovarelli

Fermented Milk by Renee Giovarelli

“Kadyrkulov needs to talk to you. He’s coming over.”

Zina had just taken his call. She looked at me with her, “Who knows?” face.  Zina is my interpreter and partner in my work in Kyrgyzstan.

“Now?” I asked.

Kachkynbai Kadyrkulov had always summoned me to his office before; that was the correct protocol. I was the foreigner; he was the deputy minister of agriculture. He cared about protocol, and he cared about not being at the beck and call of anyone, especially a foreign woman.

“What it’s like living here,” from Renee Giovarelli in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

“What it’s like living here,” from Renee Giovarelli in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan « Numéro Cinq

Here’s a lovely, exotic What it’s like living here essay from Renee Giovarelli who graduated from Vermont College of Fine Arts last summer. Renee travels the world for an NGO involved in reforming land and property rights. But she also writes urgent, passionate essays about the places she visits. For an earlier essay on Kyrgyzstan see “Fermented Milk” in New Letters. Her essay “The Bad Malaria Shot,” which she presented at her graduate reading in the summer, was a finalist for the Wasafiri 2010 New Writing Prize. Renee is one of those students I’ll always regret not having had the privilege of working with.
