The lonely beauty of Lake Son-Kul has long caught the imagination of foreign visitors to the landlocked Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan. Situated on an elevated, treeless mountain plateau (3016 m), its verdant meadows are used by shepherds of the country’s Kochkor, Naryn and At Bashi regions as feeding grounds for livestock in the summer months.

Kok-boru : goat grabbing competition near Son-Kul lake

Kyrgyzstan’s national sport, Kok-boru (Buzkashi) is a traditional Central Asian game where players grab a goat carcass from the ground while riding their horses and try to score by placing it in their opponent’s goal.

Here we have some thrilling pictures from the Son- Kul Lake, which is situated 3200 meters (10,499 feet) above sea level and some 400 km (249 miles) northeast of the capital Bishkek where the Kok-boru competition went off in huge craze on July 21, 2011. Have a look:

Travel Blog: Anne’s Central Asian adventure and more

Central Asia is probably a bit of a round-about way to get to Denmark for the summer of 2011. I admit this trip was not exactly planned this way initially, but grew topsy-turvy and now takes me through Xinjiang province in Northwestern China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to Moscow by train, bus, plane and shared taxi. Then in a quick flight from Moscow I am in Denmark, my destination.

The return is via England, New York and Washington DC. Much learnt already by reading about a region of which I was completely ignorant. Here you can follow my “progress.”

Travel Misadventures in Kyrgyzstan | Wild Junket

This is a guest post by Andy Jaroz.

We had walked for three hours to reach a cluster of large yurts. They had been erected only a few feet apart on an otherwise empty mountainside; for warmth I presumed, despite the very pleasant midday sunshine. We would be spending our first night in the Kyrgyz mountains and had finally arrived at our overnight accommodation.
